Who Is Abner?

This is how funny family history begins:

When we passed the obligatory 3-month silence about this whole baby situation, we informed our families of the pending joyful event. At that point in time, I was referring to my . . . let's call a spade a spade . . . fetus, as L'il Allison. You may notice that, on this public forum, I still do. It is an easy designation and immediately lets the reader, be the reader friend or stranger, know what I am referring to.

However, bored immediately with that designation, Senor Rob once referred to the fetus in question as L'il Abner, making a playful reference to the cartoon character of old. I laughed out loud at this verbal trick because I thought that it was funny. Chris, passing by, asked what I was laughing about. So I told him. And just like that, the potential baby became Abner. This was when we were still in India, and before we knew what sort of private parts the little critter might possess. So Abner is sort of a non-gender-specific, place-holding moniker. A nome de guerre, if you will. In personal circles and in everyday conversation, the fetus is called Abner.

Abner even has some personalized items that actually say “Abner” on them.
