Roppongi

Roppongi is also the neighborhood that we live in. Akasaka is on one side of our housing compound and Roppongi is on the other.

Roppongi is where the foreigners hang out and where the freaks go on Friday nights.

The area was getting pretty damn down-at-the-heels and crime-ridden (for Japan, I mean) until it got infused with some upscale blood when Roppongi Hills opened about five years ago. Roppongi Hills is sort of a planned community shopping plaza. It is very posh and sort of silly, but stylish. I guess. I go there to buy bagels sometimes.

There are lots of bars and karaoke rooms and whatnot, and it is really the only area that people will warn you to be careful in. There are some pickpockets around. However, all of Tokyo is extremely safe and their "high crime area" is sort of a joke.

The average age of your late-night party-goer is about 23 and the average aesthetic of your female late-night party-goer is dancing girl in a Whitesnake video on MTV in 1988. The guys look like girls and the girls look like hookers. It can be very amusing.
