kozhikode, kerala

We left Mysore on Friday, 14 January, and traveled by car to Kozhikode (population 880,000). Our travel plans were rather amorphous, as we wanted to have a high degree of freedom and didn't want to be locked into a strict schedule. So, then, we chose to go to Kozhikode because we could, quite frankly. The part of Karnataka and Kerala that we were then traveling through is an area known as the Western Ghats, which is the most mountainous region in the south. There is very little train travel between any of the smaller cities. Our only real strict objective was to be in Kochi by Thursday, 20 January, because our train back to Chennai left from there. So, in order to move in that general direction, we hired a car to take us to the Kerala Coast.

We had hoped to go on a two-day wildlife safari in the mountains but it was (as always) a holiday weekend and we had not planned far enough ahead to get a reservation. However, on our beautiful drive through the Ghats, we actually saw a herd of wild elephants, which our driver said was extremely lucky and uncommon.

thank you, beth, for showing me that picture.
please show me the next one.
