And what do you think I made Chris do first? You guessed it! Go to the Botanical Gardens! This was actually not entirely an expression of my strange and inexplicable obsession with botanical gardens. The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, just outside of Kandy, is the most famous and expansive and finest garden in Sri Lanka. I have to admit that it was one of he coolest gardens I've ever been in, mostly because they had such an extraordinary collection of weird and freakish things. One favorite of mine was the aptly-named cannonball tree, which has hard cannonball sized fruits that monkeys or, say, people can throw at each other. There were also some totally bizarre almond trees with massive hollow exposed roots and one tall tree that was nothing but a frame for wasp nests. It was a lovely day and we walked around for hours. They have a lot of fruit bats there too. I mean a LOT. Like, thousands and thousands of them, all hanging around and making funny noises and wiggling around in the treetops.
