germans in chennai

This weekend, the German community in Chennai hosted a party. It was talked up quite a bit. Rumor had it that there would be limitless GOOD German beer, real bratwurst and sauerkraut, German music and dancing, and just all around good German fun. I pictured a crowded biergarten, with steins of dark beer and weiner schnitzel.

Now, what we actually got was perfectly acceptable and I don't mean to criticize. The sausages were a nice change from dhosa and idily and all you can drink and eat for rs 800 is OK in my book. However, upon entering the door, we heard the distinct nostalgic tunes of Boston and Phil Collins. They played bad American wedding music ALL NIGHT LONG. And the beer was just Beck's that was tapped improperly. You had to wait for 20 minutes to get a small glass of foam from one of the four guys who were trying unsuccessfully to make the beer machine work correctly. And there were about 50 chairs for about 200 people. You do the math.

Apparently, this is exactly what happens every year and it is a big funny joke among the German expats. Last year, the beer tap did exactly the same thing and the DJ was exactly the same guy.

The mustard was really good though. I liked the mustard.

We went home and drank Indian beer instead.
