Asakusa

One fun place to go in Tokyo is Asakusa, where the famous Buddhist temple called Senso-ji can be found. It was originally built in the middle of the seventh century to house a small golden statue of Kannon, the Japanese goddess of mercy, that was found in the net of two local fishermen.

The area is crammed full of vendor stalls. You can buy some traditional Japanese things like sandals and parasols and whatnot. You can also buy unlimited heaps of pure, unadulterated crap. I finally found a sumo cell phone charm for my phone, which I had been seeking for months. In Japan, all cell phones are adorned with what basically amounts to bling. It is one way that Japanese folks claim some sort of individual identity. So when in Japan . . .

There is also lots of delicious food. Japanese street stall food is the BEST. I could live on it. And the restaurants in the neighborhood are fantastic.

I love food in Japan.
