alappuzha, kerala We headed for Alappuzha (population 283,000) because we had made reservations for a two-day tour through the backwaters on a houseboat that was to begin on Monday, 17 January. The backwaters are a vast network of fresh-water lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals that fringe the entire coast of Kerala. It is possible to get a private houseboat, complete with bedrooms and bathrooms, dining room, and a staff that consists of a captain and two or three chefs and waiters. So, while the small town of Alappuzha had very little to offer us, we started out on our houseboat adventure with some excitement. (Our houseboat and our captian, Joseph.) | ||
